Sanjay Mukherjee

The First Book Of Nobodyness

The stories and such like collected in this book were written between 1989 and 2007. Within those 18 years I grew from a teenage schoolboy to a college graduate to a young adult in the corporate workforce, going onto to spend the better half of a decade as a journalist, and finally moving into corporate roles. The stories are of different places, different times, different societies, and yet they are all about human experience as seen from within and expressed as a continuous dialogue with self. The liberties with language, form, syntax and the like are deliberate mostly, but having said that: all errors are entirely my own doing.

A Primer On Finite Element Analysis

Now-a-days FEM has become a common tool for solving Engineering problems in industries for the obvious reasons of its versatility and affordability. To expose an UG student to this powerful method most of the universities have included this subject in the UG curriculum. There are many good books on the subject available in the market. This book contains complementary/supplementary material to the textbooks covering comprehensively the theoretical aspects of the subject. This book is written primarily to help the students as a gentle introduction to the practice of FEM. This book contains many 1-D and 2-D problems solved by analytical method, by FEM using hand calculations and by using commercial FEM, ANSYS 12 academic teaching software. Results of all the methods have been compared. This helps the students in building confidence in the method. Chapter 1 contains brief introduction to FEA, theoretical background and its application. Chapter 2 contains the linear static analysis of bars of constant cross-section, tapered cross-section and stepped bar. In each section different variety of exercise problems are given. Chapter 3 contains the linear static analysis of trusses. Trusses problems are also selected in such way that each problem is having different boundary conditions to apply. Chapter 4 contains the linear static analysis of simply supported and cantilever beams. In the chapters 2 to 4 all the problems are considered as one dimensional in nature. Stress analysis of rectangular plate with a circular hole is covered in chapter 5. In this chapter emphasis is given on the concept of exploiting symmetric geometry and symmetric loading conditions. Also stress and deformation plots are given. Chapter 6 contains the thermal analysis of cylinders and plates. Here both one dimensional and two dimensional problems are considered. Chapter 7 contains the problems of potential flow distribution over a cylinder and over an airfoil. Chapter 8 contains the dynamic analysis (modal and transient analysis) of bars and beams. Chapter 9 contains the introduction to ANSYS Workbench.

A Complete Guide To Letters Of Credit And The Ucp

This book clarifies several issues that had remained unclear to many over the decades, and underscores critical issues and noteworthy points borne out of experience gained over the years while dealing with documentary credit operations and the ICC Rules. A few articles of mine, appearing at the end of this book, could be of interest, and offer fresh perspective, to readers with an analytical or academic bent of mind. In this book I have assumed no prior knowledge from my readers. Instead, I have tried to explain each topic in as great a detail as considered necessary for a better understanding and proper grasp of the subjects covered, and as I would have treated them during my workshops and lecture sessions. The information ranges from the basic to the advanced. In this book the focus is more on the practical applications of documentary credits, on the rules of the game, the ‘why’s and the ‘how’s, the do’s and don’ts. I tried to show where the land mines could lie. In that endeavour, the clauses of the UCP have been interpreted with reference to their relevance and utility, their practical applicability in real life situations. The key provisions of the UCP have been integrated seamlessly into the text of this book, providing the context to the issues relevant to international trade.

A Manual Of Ugc Net/JRF Exam Teaching and Research Aptitude

The authors have made adequate use of all the available materials for preparing UGC Tests and relevant publications by various authors. The authors have consolidated all the available information in a single volume. They would like to express their deep sense of gratitude to all those who have contributed to the present publication. We are deeply indebted to our most beloved and venerable Guru, Prof. (Dr) A. Sukumaran Nair, former Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University for his timely suggestions and expert help and unstinted support which made possible the publication of the present volume. Dr. Nair has been associated with many of the apex bodies, connected with teacher education and higher education like the UGC, NAAC, ICSSR, NCERT, NCTE to name a few. Both the authors of this book were fortunate to be his students and were inspired by his dynamism, expertise and innovative approach to modern education. We have no words to place on record our immense gratitude to our Professor for sparing his valuable time for scrutinizing and correcting the manuscript of this book. We fail to find out an appropriate word in the dictionary that would convey our deep gratitude to our Hon. Vice Chancellor, Dr. M. Abdul Salam. He has so generously accepted our request to go through this big volume. Though we were hesistant to ask such a busy person to write a forwarding note to this book, the way he accepted our request and the encouragement rendered to us make us bow our heads before his graciousness. Despite his hectic official responsibilities Dr. M. Abdul Salam, who is a scientist by profession, spared his precious time to examine these 850 pages and prepared a foreword to his book. We are deeply indebted to him. The authors intend to make periodical revisions of this book every year so as to update the content of the book. We will be greatly obliged to those who point out the mistakes or ambiguities, in this edition, or suggestions if any. We assure them that this will be used for improving the future editions. Wish you all success in the examinations.

A Textbook Of Engineering Mathematics ii

It is with the grace of God and over whelming response given by learned professors and discerning students that our book ‘A Textbook of Engineering Mathematics’ is gaining increasing popularity. We thank the almighty that our hardwork paid off and also place on record our sense of gratitude to the esteemed readers for their so much appreciation of our work. Every year we revise the book as per university and our readers’ requirements and bring the necessary alterations in the subject matter of the book. This edition of the book is strictly according to the revised syllabus of Engineering Mathematics-II. Authors observed that these days the trend of paper setting of various universities is to test the general understanding of the subject. So keeping in view this trend, this new edition is revised with lot of care, dedication and patience. The following are the salient features of this edition : (i) Many new solved examples and problems are added in each chapter. Also hints are given alongside typical unsolved problems. (ii) Where needed, recapitulation of the topic is given in the beginning of the chapter. Working rules for lengthy formulae are also given. (iii) At the end of each chapter ‘Review of the Chapter’ is introduced so that students can revise the chapter at a glance. Also at the end of each chapter ‘Short Answer Type Questions’ are given which form compulsory section (containing ten questions each of two marks) of the paper. The present edition includes all the questions set in last ten years university papers mostly in the form of solved examples—these will certainly make students familiar with university pattern. We have tried our best to make the book ‘mistake-free’ but inspite of our best efforts some errors might have crept in the book. Report of any such error and all suggestions for improving the future edition of the book are welcome and will be gratefully acknowledged. It is hoped that book in its new form will attract more readers and will be found to be of much more utility. We wish our readers the very best of luck for their brilliant success in life.

100 Shell Programs In Unix

The UNIX system is so successful. Why? First, because UNIX is portable, i.e., runs on a range of computers and adapts to particular requirements. Second, the UNIX programming environment is unusually rich and productive. The UNIX system has become very popular, and there are number of versions in wide use. Regardless of the version you run on your system, the difference in coding you find will be minor. The book’s small size is meant to keep your investment in time down to a minimum but with the greatest possible amount of knowledge. This book is organized as follows: Part I is an introduction to the most basic use of the system. It covers logging in, the file system, commonly used commands, and logging out. Part II contains 100 programs (including shell script and programs in C). The best way to learn something is by doing it. Kindly practice the programs and verify or contradict what we say. All the examples in this text are actual, runnable code tested on UNIX system. As a reader of this book, you are the most important critic and commentator. You can email or write to us directly to let us know what you did or didn’t like about this book – as well as what we can do to make our book stronger.

A Handbook Of Techniques In Bio Chemistry And Molecular Biology

Today most technicians, undergraduates and postgraduates in the biological and life sciences require knowledge of biochemistry and especially the practical aspects of the subject. Although, biochemistry constitutes one of the important subjects in the student's curriculum, techniques teaching have been somehow neglected for past many years in the institutions. One of the main reasons for such a poor status of this important subject is the paucity of trained teachers, particularly with biochemistry background. This has consequently hampered the practical curriculum in biochemistry at undergraduate as well as postgraduate levels. This book is aimed at undergraduates and postgraduates who have a basic grounding in biological sciences and are interested in a future career in research and industry. The book provides an understanding of up-to-date information on the concerned topics in a simple, lucid and concise manner. It attempts to convey something of the fascination of working in a field which overlaps the disciplines of biochemistry, cell-biology and biotechnology. The book content covers the various techniques used in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, Pharmacology, laboratories. It deals with the comparative analysis, procedure followed for techniques, their advantages, drawbacks and limitations. The content covers about 90% of the various techniques used by Bachelors and Masters and Doctoral students moreover it is of use for students of various universities like: University of Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia University, Banaras Hindu University, Bundelkhand University etc. The text of the book has been illustrated with simplified well-labeled color diagrams and pictures to make the subject easy to understand and interesting to the students. The book has potential for being developed as a textbook or Lab manual for techniques. The book is therefore suitable for many B.Sc., M.Sc and technical courses in biochemistry as per UGC model curriculum. It could also be used as source of reference for research workers who need to understand and use biochemical techniques in their work. The objective in writing this handbook is mainly to acquaint the beginner with various biochemistry principles and to provide a laboratory guide to teachers concerned. In writing the first edition, our aim is to explain a new and rapidly growing technology. The basic philosophy is to present the principles of gene manipulation and its associated techniques, in sufficient detail to enable the non-specialist reader to understand them. It is assumed that the reader would have a reasonable working knowledge of molecular biology

Angst And Hope In Contemporary Indian English Fiction

Angst or anguish is a Germanic word for fear or anxiety. Heidegger's Sein und Zeit could be rendered as Anxiety, uneasiness or malaise suggesting our daily anxieties. For Kierkegaard Angst meant dread while for Sartre anguish. However, the word Angst does not have the same meaning for every existentialist writer (Macquarrie 164-5). Kierkegaard's Angst (dread) describes an innate spiritual state of insecurity and despair centering on his conception of original sin. According to him, "anxiety is a qualification of dreaming spirit, and as such it has its place in psychology. In anxiety it (innocence) is related to the forbidden and to the punishment. Innocence is not guilty, yet there is anxiety as though it were lost" (Kierkegaard 41-5). The concept of anxiety further draws our attention to the origin and meaning of evil and temptation to sin. Virgilius Haufniensis's interpretation throws further light on it. In his view the origin of sinfulness is sheer possibility as it is neither 'absolute necessity' or 'arbitrary wilfulness.' 'Anxiety or apprehensiveness is an innocent sense of oneself as possibility rather than actuality.' (Chamberlain 178). The concept of dread is further analysed by Friedman in his interpretation of Kierkegaard: as he rightly remarks, "Dread is the dizziness of freedom which occurs when the spirit would posit the synthesis, and freedom then gazes down into its own possibility, grasping at finiteness to sustain itself. In this dizziness freedom succumbs." (Friedman 369). Hope, on the other hand, is at the very core of every religion with its transforming role: Christian hope in the second coming of Christ; Vaishnava Hindus await in hope of another avatar of Vishnu; Jews hope in the Messiah; Islam speaks of a hidden imam (leader or exemplar); Buddhists refer to Maitreya as the Buddha to come.

Air Pollution And Control

Man's quest for progress is eternal. In his zeal to achieve scientific and technological advancement, which he hopes would make his life happier, man is unwittingly endangering the surroundings and tilting the ecological balance. Some of these are a result of unimaginative planning and reckless execution. The wanton destruction of vegetation with gay abandon and the prolific construction of concrete jungles in its place, coupled with the unconscionable disposal of even toxic industrial wastes into the air threaten the very survival of the humankind. ‘Man will thus kill himself if he thoughtlessly and violently upsets the delicate web of environment of which he is a part’. Everyone is crying hoarse from house tops about the need to protect environment But it is only a few like Sundarlal Bahuguna and Medha Patkar that have been making a valiant effort, even risking their lives, to bring awareness among the public in this regard. Even scientists and engineers confine their protests merely to paying lip sympathy. This is due to a total lack of understanding of the deleterious effects of environmental pollution. It is with a view to educating these elite sections of the society that a humble attempt is made by this author in highlighting the probable causes of air pollution suggesting remedial measures for minimising iL Every effort has been made to make the subject matter easily understandable even by a layman, in the fond hope that everyone would make his contribution towards providing a safer and cleaner environment. The reproduction of some of the material from the publications of the Bureau of Indian Standards is acknowledged. Extensive reference has been made to contributions by various authors, which is also gratefully acknowledged. The help rendered directly or indirectly, by several friends and well-wishers, in bringing out this book in its present form is also placed on record with appreciation and a sense of gratitude. As mentioned earlier, this is a humble attempt and the first by the author. Any suggestion for the improvement of this book to make it a more effective and useful tool in disseminating the knowledge on this most important subject of air pollution is wholeheartedly welcome

An Update On Business Laws For Commerce And Management

The study of Business Management is incomplete without the study of Business Laws. Law is an instrument of social control. The study of Business Laws helps in understanding the legal aspects and rules governing business transactions. Business Law is a branch of Civil Law. It governs and addresses the legal theoretical framework consisting of Rules and Regulations affecting business or Commercial transactions and economic activities. The subject is therefore very important for students studying Commerce/Business subjects. This book is also useful to others who wish to understand the concept of Business Laws for their individual information. This textbook is designed to provide the readers a basic understanding of Laws relating to business focusing on the students studying Mercantile Law at the Diploma Level, Graduation Level (B.Com, BBM and BBA) at the Post Graduation Level and also for those taking up professional courses like CA-CPT and CS-foundation. The book also includes ample illustrations and decided legal cases for the reader to understand related topics. This book would be useful for every person as it is necessary to have some knowledge of law for his everyday transactions. The knowledge of Mercantile Law or Business Laws would make a person appreciate the legal entanglements pertaining to their transactions, avoid legal litigations, and obtain timely expert advice. With the intention of making the subject of Law interesting and help students having Business Law as a subject either at the Under Graduation level or Post Graduation level, the text is divided into 4 chapters for easy segregation, topicwise. The reader is encouraged to analyze and evaluate legal provisions and to adopt a practical approach to seeking solutions. Suggestions for the improvement of the book will be gratefully acknowledged.

Immunology And Molecular Diagnostics

Immunology and Molecular Diagnostics is one of the fundamental subjects of life sciences. The present book is written for students which are taking their first course in immunology and molecular diagnostics, whether as undergraduate or graduate students. The objective of this book is to develop graded information from basic to more understanding of present knowledge about immunology and molecular diagnostics. For some students this may well meet their needs, but for some students wishing to undertake further studies in immunology, this book will serve as a sound basis for more detailed or specific studies. The book is specifically targeted to serve as a useful text for college and university students. It will also prove very useful for research institutes and postgraduates involved in practical research in immunology and diagnostics. Information in life sciences is expanding rapidly but the human brain capacity is not. This discrepancy creates an increasing challenge for textbook writers, teachers, and especially students. I have had to summarize omitting much detail that, overabundance, can prevent understanding. The author does not claim the originality of the matter presented in the book. Various reference books and standard books have been consulted and the inspiration from these superlative authors is highly acknowledged. I am grateful to my teachers of the past and to my present colleagues without whose cooperation this work would be of limited value and progress would be difficult. Like all teachers, I am also inspired by my students. We not only pass on knowledge to them, we also learn from them. Finally, I thank my husband, Dr. Puneet, my daughter, Aahana, my sister, Shelly, brother, Manish and my parents for their patience with me everytime I went off with my laptop to write. I especially owe a debt of thanks and gratitude to Prof. Randhir Singh.

Ethical Management

Mary Parker Follet defined management as the art of getting things done. This is a most value-free definition where there is no obligation on the part of manager or the worker to be ethical. To a larger extent even there is no obligation on business to give customers what s/he desires as long as the business can make more profit. Apparently, no one took notice as business organizations are focussed on economic value addition and everyone is trying to delight the customer to increase market penetration. But in this view there is no consideration of ethics except due to social pressures. The outcome of such an approach is there for everyone to see. We have institutionalized corruption on a global scale. There is manipulation of accounts, fudging of economic and financial data and increasing dissatisfaction in the society. In the ultimate analysis we must accept that organisational values always derive from individual values. That is where the importance of instilling basic values in the individual becomes vital. An attempt has been made in this book to explore the philosophy of values and its application to management. Moving away from the definition of management as getting things done, I have defined management as "a series of ethical actions done by people, using technology and resources, to achieve a state of joy and happiness in the minds of both, producers and consumers" The book is divided into three sections - Ethical Value, Value-based management and Ethical business. The primary concept developed here is that authentic and productive behaviour of people can be founded only on such principles and theories, which are in consonance with human nature at the deepest and universal level. The fourth section presents 19 cases on ethical values, applied ethics and corporate governance to train the mind on making a value judgement. This book progresses from individual ethics to managerial and organizational ethics to address issues of ethical behaviour, ethical conduct, applied ethics and social responsibility. As Dr S.P. Kosta, Former Director of Indian Space Research Organization, in his foreword of the book says, "The orientation towards ethics would help in developing positive relationship with other people at work places and would be better equipped to deal with human emotions. The book will help future decision makers in preventing the creation of culture of corruption at the outfit they will help run."

Financial Management Theory And Practice

My friends, colleagues and well-wishers, in banks, industries and academia, and the top and senior executives of banks and industries, participating in my Management Development Programmes (MDPs), and the PGP students at the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, have been persuading me, to venture into writing a comprehensive book on ‘Financial Management’, in the Indian context and conditions, citing suitable illustrative live cases and examples, drawn from Indian experiences. They were, perhaps, thinking that, with my vast and varied experience as a professional banker with the State Bank of India for around three decades, in several senior positions, I may be able to do full justice to the subject. In fact, their such a high opinion of, and expectation from me, had been more a deterrent, rather than a facilitating factor, in my daring to take up such a demanding endeavour on my part. Besides, my varied experience and widespread knowledge in the area had made me feel that the task was rather too stupendous, difficult and demanding, even to make a humble beginning in this direction. But then, it took me long precious time to realise that howsoever long and difficult a journey may be, it can be completed only after taking the first step; that is, when a small beginning is made. Thus, the hard and hefty, concerted and concentrated efforts, made in the right direction, and in right earnest, have made it possible for me to place the book, my humble work, before you. A book, like one’s own baby, is invariably the most beloved and beautiful one to its author. But then, the real judges are, definitely and decidedly, the readers themselves. And, if they would think that the book has presented the difficult and dull subject like ‘Financial Management’ in a quite easy-to-understand, interesting and entertaining manner, I would think that my sincere endeavour was worth the effort. And, if the readers, the students (of B.Com. and M.Com., MBA and PGP, degrees and diplomas), the Chartered Accountants, the professional and practising bankers and industrialists, experience that, while reading the book, they tend to feel as if the author had personally been talking to them, instead, on a one-to-one basis, I would sincerely thank them all, and think that my sincere and strenuous efforts have been amply rewarded. I sincerely feel that even the practising professionals of commercial banks and industries may find the book quite relevant for reference and refreshing purposes. A summary, containing the essence of each Chapter at its end, may be found very useful and handy for the students at the time of their examination. Even the Professors, teaching the subject, may find the synopsis immensely useful for preparing the required transparencies or slides on Power-Point Software, for use in their lecture sessions. I earnestly solicit valuable suggestions from my worthy readers, for bringing in further improvements in the next edition of the book.

William Shakes Peare in his famous Drama, Henry IV, has said “Out of this nettle, danger, we pluck this flower, safety”. In God’s creation, danger and human falibility do exist in all spheres. Industry too has it’s share. Since independence, India has tried to take wide strides by embarking upon a planned economy with a view to generate all-round industrial development. In recent years, industrial development has resulted in advent of large enterprises with huge labour force. Obviously, the larger the labour force, the greater are the potential problems, particularly, their safety. Besides, the recent trend indicates that the employee can no longer be viewed as a commodity one must heed the writing on the wall. The state must move the alert manager to a recognition of the importance of the safety approach. The labour force today is better organised through the increasing strength of trade unions and their mighty movements. Worldwide, every year, around 60,000 people die and huge numbers are disabled for life in accidents. The I.L.O. findings portray an alarming picture on this score. Compared to other countries, there is precious little authentic data in respect of accident rates, causes and preventive measure taken by the Indian industries. No agency till date has been assigned the responsiblity to compile such records and no voluntary efforts have been made in this regard. However, as per one report at an all India level, 165 per one thousand workers get injured during construction activities. This is obviously very high, compared to the rates in the developed countries. Findings of I.L.O. reveal that the accident rate among industrial workers is highest in India, touching 4 per 1000 and a major share of it is accounted for by the building and construction sector. The chief cause of the majority of safety related losses is the absence of systematic process to identify and mitigate work place hazards and total unsafe work practices. It is the product of failure of supervision and management to effectively communicate the importance the safety has, on the continuing economic viability of the organisation employing them. The connotation of safety is far more than a worker, wearing a hat in the workshop of a factor on construction sites. It is rather a philosophy that identifies and eliminates job site hazards throughout life cycle of a project. It is a philosophy that discourages work practices that place individuals at risk of injury and death. It is the integration of safety in to the daily work process. It is also the promotion of an environment, where each person in the hierarchy, has a role and responsibility for safety. It is an established fact that out of one hundred accidents, eighty eight account for human error and only twelve relate to machine failures. There are numerous international codes, laws, and legislations in developed countries regulating the whole gamut of industrial activities starting from the drawing and design state up to completion and regular operation, upkeep and maintenance.

Hibernate With Java —a Practical Approach

The Object Relational Mapping (ORM) is a technique that maps the data represented in object type into relational model with a database schema. The Hibernate is an open source ORM tool for Java; it maps Java Objects into database objects such as tables. Hibernate also provides powerful querying tool that does the reverse process, converting database objects into Java objects. It simplifies the database interactions very much; otherwise the developers have to write complex JDBC statements. It is object oriented so that the developers can enjoy the features of Object Oriented Programming System (OOPS) features in handling data on any database. Hibernate provides transparent persistence and Object-Oriented Query Language which is independent of any database. Hibernate supports native SQL queries as well. The Chapter 1 (Getting Ready) make you get ready to work with Hibernate. It explains the installation procedure of Hibernate and other required supporting software tools such Java, Database, and Integrated Development Environment (IDE). This chapter introduces you the need of Hibernate and its architecture. It describes how to download and install supporting software components to work with Hibernate programs. The database MySQL is used for database interaction examples. However, the users may use other RDBMS databases, with minor changes in programs. The procedure for other databases is also given in this chapter. Like this, the user is not compelled to use only Tomcat as Application server and Eclipse as Java IDE. The Chapter 2 (Persisting Student Data with Hibernate: Demo) demonstrates a complete working example with Hibernate. It explains how to insert one record of Student information into database table using Hibernate. Based on this example, this chapter explains briefly about the configuration details and required setups to work with Hibernate such as Creating database user, Creating Java Project in Eclipse, Setting up the required Hibernate and other library files with Eclipse, and Defining Hibernate configurations. The configurations are to be followed for examples shown in other chapters. The Hibernate API used this chapter are not explained in this chapter itself, but explained in the next chapters in detail. The Chapter 3 (Hibernate Session) introduces working with Hibernate Sessions. All data definition and manipulation should be done in Hibernate through Session. Any object should be present in the Session before it is interacted with database. The Hibernate Session Factory acts a database connection pool and Hibernate Session acts a Connection, if it is compared with JDBC. The Hibernate Session Factory is used to provide Hibernate Session(s), which are used to do relational mappings of objects such as definition and manipulation of data with database.

Introduction To Multimedia

The new syllabus of DOE’s various levels of courses, popularly called O-level, Alevel, B-level and C-level is out. Keeping in mind the various developments taking place around the world in the field of computers, these syllabus include most of them. While keeping in mind the level of students studying the various levels, the degree of difficulties of the syllabus have been very well designed. I hope that after the new syllabus the courses would be as popular as they were before. There had been a long struggle between Training Institutes and Government Organizations, since these organizations would not recognize the degree/diploma given by them. Students passing out from these institutions were not given jobs based upon the said diplomas/degrees. Ultimately, the Government formed a society under the Department of Electronics, called DOEACC, who conducts tests and gives grades to the students irrespective of the institutes where they have studied. It is also possible to give the test without having any proper institutional studies. This is more or less on the terms of SAT and GRE conducted by USA. The only difference is that this is not online. There are fixed dates for the exams. The course for this has been designed for students to appear in the exams at various levels. These levels are O-level, A-level, B-level, C-level. The most popular among these is the O-level, since it is the entry level. Once you have cleared the O-level, you are eligible for a government job. Each course has been divided into various modules. Various books are available for various modules. This book is also made for you to prepare for the O-level course. This book has been written totally in accordance with the syllabus provided. Each chapter has been embedded with the screen shots for you to know what to expect on the screen, while running the application. Each chapter contains examples which can be attempted to supplement the reading. At the end of the chapter, there is a thorough revision of the text read. Not to mention of the questions provided in the beginning, both in the form of objective and subjective. The book also contains Sample papers which are based on the samples provided by DOEACC society. These would help you in preparing for the exams.

Cryptography And Network Security

Too many engineers consider cryptography to be a sort of magic security dust that they can sprinkle over their hardware or software, and which will imbue those products with the mythical property of “security.” Security is only as strong as the weakest link, and the mathematics of cryptography is almost never the weakest link. The fundamentals of cryptography are important, but far more important are, how those fundamentals are implemented and used. You can argue whether the stake should be a mile or a mile-and-a-half high, but the attacker is simply going to walk around the stake. Security is a broad stockade: it’s the things around the cryptography that make the cryptography effective. This book is intended for Professional cryptographers, presenting the techniques and algorithms of greatest interest to the current practitioner, along with the supporting motivation and background material. It also provides a comprehensive source from which to learn cryptography, serving both students and instructors. Throughout each chapter, we emphasize the relationship between various aspects of cryptography. We believe this style of presentation allows a better understanding of how algorithms actually work. Each chapter was written to provide a self-contained treatment of one major topic. Collectively, however, the chapters have been designed and carefully integrated to be entirely complementary with respect to definitions, terminology, and notation. Furthermore, there is essentially no duplication of material across chapters; instead, appropriate cross-chapter references are provided where relevant.

Cryptography And Network Security —a Practical Approach

The explosive growth in computer systems and their interconnections via network has increased the dependence of both organizations and individuals on the information stored and communicated using these systems. The internet as a world wide communication network has changed our daily life in many ways. The internet, as an open forum, has created some security problems. Network security is a set of protocols that allows us to use the internet comfortably without worrying about security attacks. The most common tool for providing network security is cryptography, an old technique that has been revived and adopted to network security. In this Universal electronic connectivity, virus and hackers, electronic eavesdropping, and electronic fraud, security is paramount. This book provides a practical survey of the principles of cryptography and network security.

Life Skills To Excel In Life

This is not another book on self-development. It is an exclusive resource book on Life Skills devised from about 20 years of research on several thousands of people of all professions. Undoubtedly, to become an achiever, one needs to possess the ‘WILL’! Thousands of books are written to motivate people to aspire with ‘WILL’. But unfortunately, ‘will’ alone will not be able to make anyone an achiever without the know-how to pursue it. And that is, the SKILL! Very few are blessed with these skills as inborn abilities. However, in my experience as a trainer and counsellor for several thousands of people of all professions, I had been able to help them acquire extraordinary skills and excel in their endeavours. Even an ordinary person could become extraordinary through these unique life skills. Fortunately, all these skills are very practical, simple and down-to-earth. At the same time, every skill is scientific and very effective. Whether you are outstanding or mediocre, when you use these skills.

Fire In The Belly

“Let there be a fire within you.” This line oft-got repeated by Sajid Sir during our English classes in high school. All of us eagerly awaited his class. It was more of an inspirational session than a typical classroom lecture. We felt a surge of energy after attending his class; even on occasions when it was the last class of the day. Such was the power of his subtle expression and instant motivation. He was a mentor and a friend rolled into one. He recognized our hidden talents, motivated us to work harder and commended us for our efforts. Probably that’s the reason I am daring to write this book.

Discrete Mathematics

Discrete Mathematics, the study of finite mathematical systems, is a hybrid subject. The topics covered in this book have been chosen keeping in view the knowledge required to understand the functioning of the digital computer because many of its properties can be understood and interpreted within the frame work of finite mathematical systems. This book provides reasonably rigorous and compact treatment of major mathematical techniques available for study in theoretical computer science. An attempt has been made to cover elementary to advance concepts in each chapter to take care of the needs of students who may earlier not have knowledge of these topics. Each chapter contains sufficiently large number of solved examples and illustrations to explain definitions, principles, theorems and other descriptive material. This is followed by sets of Self Practice Problems with Hints and Answers to stimulate further learning and interest. The book is designed to be self-contained and comprises of 13 chapters. It can be used by students of BSc (Maths), BCA/BIS/BIT and BE/BTech as an introduction to the fundamental concepts of discrete mathematics and by students of MSc, MCA, MTech for the development of more advanced mathematical concepts required in computer science applications.

Concrete Technology

Concrete has become indispensable in construction of modern buildings, bridges, nuclear structures, off shore structures and in many other applications. This is generally preferred for desired strength and high durability during the service life of the structure. Concrete is the second largest material consumed by human civilization now a days just after water. Over the recent years, there is a huge increase in the concrete production throughout the world. The subject has, therefore, been incorporated in various institutes to make this material familiar to students. But the number of books in the market is still limited. Present book has been written in a simple and lucid manner incorporating the recent developments of the subject so that the future engineers are well acquainted with the subject during their undergraduate study. Present book contains fundamentals of the subject concrete technology such as hydration of cement, cement types, concrete making materials, workability, hardened properties of concrete, durability, mix design, chemical and mineral admixtures, special concretes, high performance concrete, self compacting concrete, non-destructive testing, waste materials in concrete. The book will serve as a textbook at undergraduate level in Civil Engineering in Indian Universities, NITs and IITs.

Human Resource Management A Dynamic Approach

My earlier books— Management Principles was for the Management and Engineering students at the undergraduate level; and Management Principles and Practices was for the Master’s level. The current book Human Resource management: A Dynamic Approach focuses on the Human Resource aspect of management. This book is primarily for those who are preparing themselves for an exciting, rewarding, and enriching career in Human Resource aspect of management. In recent years, this field of specialization is getting popular and due to this popularity many students prefer to specialize in Human Resource Management. Although the principles of management and, particularly, the Human Resource Management are brought out and discussed in the initial chapters of this book, the practices built on such principles are discussed and illustrated from time to time. Those who read the book get an idea as to how such principles form a solid foundation to the practices in the field of Human Resource Management. Without such principles, the practices wither away because they do not make sense or the students go away with vague understanding. Any practice which is built on solid principles will be effective and efficient. While effectiveness is achieved through attainment of targets, objectives, and goals, the efficiency is accomplished through combining of various resources available to an organization, especially, the human resources. Harrington Emerson’s proposed twelve principles of Efficiency that were according to him, intensely practical, tested, and extremely successful. Without principles, practices are just hollow bricks and without practices, the principles remain as principles. In this book, Human resource or management principles, provide a strong basis for practices and this relationship is very essential for understanding the Human resource management and its practices. Thus, dynamism is brought into the understanding of Human Resource Management.

Managerial Economics

Managerial Economics is the economics of today. Modern management demands it. In the last quarter of the century we have witnessed an evergrowing report between economic theorists and managerial economists, based on realization of their mutual interdependence. That, in fact, is the spirit behind writing this book. Managerial economics is concerned with discussion making at the managerial level. The book presents the alternative theories of firm behaviour, decision making problems and different approaches to arrive at the most appropriate answers to such problems. This is accomplished through a brief and logical discussion on the various relevant concepts and techniques and through hypothetical examples, to illustrate the decision-making process. At the end of each chapter, small caselets are incorporated for students to work on in order to ascertain their understanding of the material presented in the corresponding chapter. The approach adopted is a good mix of verbal language, geometry and algebra. While the emphasis is on theory and normative answers numerous practical examples are cited and integrated in the material presented in the text. Managerial economics draws heavily from micro-economics, econometrics and operations research. Accordingly, the book borrows the relevant concepts from all these disciplines and also some from macro-economics. The approach of the text is to first pose problems relating to the decision making process and then seek answers. The book does not give the detailed exposition of micro-economics or of any other disciplines, rather it accords a synthesis of all the relevant aspects of the related subjects to arrive for decision-making problems faced by the firms. The book is written primarily for students pursuing post-graduate courses in management. It should also be useful to those who are doing M. Com and CA. Since many instructors of economics emphasize applications the book could serve as good reference book for those students who are doing MA in Economics as well.

Deviant Usage And Confusing Words

Deviant Usage and Confusing Words is a compilation of short articles published weekly in The Heritage from 2002–2004. The Heritage is a Ghanaian newspaper published by Heritage Communications Limited, Accra. In the first edition, my objective was to sharpen the awareness of Educated English-speaking Ghanaians on deviant usage peculiar to English in Ghana and on commonly confused words. The objective remains the same for this new edition. However, this second edition has been expanded to include. 14 new articles which were written after the publication of the first edition. A new feature designed to increase the word power of users of the book is the “Dictionary Work” box at the end of each unit. The vocabulary items for study relate to the thematic focus of the unit, and are intended not only to augment the word power of the user but also to stimulate their dictionary use habit. It is common knowledge that many educated people especially those who do routine work hardly touch the dictionary.

LINUX KERNEL AND DEVICE DRIVER PROGRAMMING

Being an electrical engineering student at my undergraduate level, my exposure to Linux started rather late and was limited to C programming on Linux PC. My true interaction with Linux started during my post graduation at IIT DELHI, wherein I started learning Linux shell commands, Vi editor etc. Still my experience remained limited to user space work like programming, networking and basic system administration. My first encounter with kernel programming happened when I was given an assignment to write a device driver for mouse. Although I could succeed in getting mouse events, I could not complete the assignment. But it left an interesting area open to me which I continued to explore till date. The idea of sharing the experience started when I finished a self assignment to write a network device driver on 2.4 kernel. I wrote an article and published it on Linux Malta group. The article turned out to be an immensely popular which increased my faith in sharing my experience. Later, the same article was re-published in Linux Gazette magazine because Linux Malta group website went down. Based on the responses from the readers I realized that while many good, in-fact very good, reference books are available about Linux device driver programming, still there is a void in teaching an end to end driver development. Specifically a sample and real hardware made users to do the real development from scratch. Encouraged from this article’s success, I decided to write similar articles for block, USB, char, UART drivers as well and put them together along with kernel programming articles so that a reader finds all of them in one place. That’s how this book has originated. All the code samples in this book are written or re-written for 2.6.21 kernel, however wherever needed, reference to older kernel are also been given so that readers may know the difference if they have to work on older kernels. The examples sited throughout this book are trimmed versions of the self assignments done at home on Linux running on AMD AthlonTM processor. Specifically the error handling part is either removed or is minimal for the sake of brevity. Also the driver design is kept very simple and minimal basic functions are implemented for easy understanding. This will help readers to quickly understand and then modify them to add more features, error handling and bug fixing to grasp better understanding.

Golden CO-ORDINATE GEOMETRY

This book has been my aim to lay before the students a strictly rigorous and yet very simple exposition of Co-ordinate Geometry and its applications. Like the companion volumes Differential Calculus, Real Analysis, Differential Equations, Integral Calculus, Statics, Dynamics etc. The book has the following special features: 1. The development of the subject is systematics. 2. Almost every article is followed by properly graded illustrative examples. 3. It contains solutions of questions set in various Indian Universities and competitive examinations. Most of the examples are selected from the university papers. Errors or misprints, if any, are unintentional and regretted. Suggestions for further improvement will be warmly received.

FINESSE

The Department of English, St. Joseph’s Degree and PG College, Hyderabad has introduced contemporary curriculum changes after having successfully completed its First Cycle of Autonomy. These changes are done stringently according to the UGC directive to make changes in the syllabi every three years. We have redesigned the curriculum keeping in mind the four skills of LSRW along with critical thinking skills, “personality development” and “soft skills.” Today, English has become synonymous to success. Mastery in communication skills will go a long way in making students successful. We have tried to cater to the needs simplifying grammar, vocabulary, phonetics and literature by using varied activities. The very significant “Competitive Examination” segment has been incorporated along with computer usage knowledge—copyrights and plagiarism. Précis writing and “assertive communication” have also been added as industry feedback. The material is drawn from various genres and styles using modern English. There is a touch of “National Pride” along with a liberal sprinkling of spiritual and moral ethics. Our country is a young nation, therefore, this generation needs strong ethical and moral values to safeguard our Indian culture and tradition. As and where required “Literary Terms” have been appropriately explained.

DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING

“Digital Image Processing” is now-a-days a demanding and interesting field. It is a core subject for Electronics and Communication and Computer Engineering. On the other hand it is the interdis- ciplinary subject that is a part of different branches of engineering. This shows the importance of the subject. But the deficiency of this area is that there are very few books available in the market for a general Indian student. I have tried here to represent all the fundamentals of Digital Image Processing in an easy way. Here we start the discussion with the chapter 1 that deals with Fundamentals of Image Processing. Here we will discuss some familiar examples of Image Processing, Components of Image Processing System and Generation of Digital Image. Chapters 2 and 3 deal with Image Enhancement Techniques in Spatial Domain and Frequency Domain respectively. Image Enhancement is the most demanding field and mostly applicable area of Image Processing. In the next chapter, we discuss Image Restoration . The image is degraded due to noise that is to be restored at the receiver side by using different filtering methods. Till this chapter, we have discussed the gray level image. In chapter 5, these concepts of Gray Images are explained for Color Image. Next chapter deals with Morphological Image Processing . From this chapter onwards, we consider the features and attributes of an Image. Chapter Registration deals with transformation of image at different planes for different purposes. In next chapter, we discuss the Image Segmentation that is very important and fundamental step of image processing. By the chapter Data Compression , we become familiar with the data compression techniques that will help us to save the bandwidth and space.

Taking a Lesson from The Mistakes of Others

Doing something objectionable to the society is generally regarded a mistake. Doing something not permitted under law is considered a crime. Similarly, doing something not permitted under the religion is considered a sin. Whether we commit a mistake, a crime, or a sin, we stand to lose not only our reputation and incur some financial loss, but we may also have some mental distress. Unless we are able to satisfy others that we are right we can t claim to be right. Yet we may also have to do some things that are normally not permitted, due to some reasons of our own. But as long as we are not expected to compensate for the loss anybody may incur due to such an action and we don't compensate the affected person, we would be considered to have committed a mistake. If we ever commit a mistake it only shows that we had not been as cautious as we should have been. Of course, the mistakes make us more cautious for the future. But it is not enough to depend only on our own mistakes. We should also learn lessons from the mistakes committed by others. This book begins with the story of a girl who reposed too much confidence in her inner voice. She married a boy without even ascertaining his family background. No wonder, it became too late by the time she could realize that our inner voice can mislead us also. In this manner the author has covered several real-life stories to make the reader aware of the type of mistakes some people have committed in their life.
